Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially in the case of an Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi tt key programming, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning.
