Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you don't like the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. With a little patience, you can get an entirely new handle in a short time.

Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that hide the screws for an attractive appearance. If the new handle doesn't have screws already connected, you'll need to attach them separately.

Remove the Old Handle

The door handle is not only a decorative addition to your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock your door. Over time, the door handle may start to lose its grip or feel a bit loose. It could be beginning to appear aged and worn. This is an indication that it's time for a replacement.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common for older doors, but could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or are not sized correctly for the latch, or because of damaged or broken strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure as adjusting the strike plate, but using an iron file instead of the hammer and chisel.

Eliminating the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that moves through the hole on the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door shut. If your door is wiggles when you close it, changing the latch may be all that's needed to fix it.

It's difficult to see the screws that attach the latch to the door, however there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and pry it off. Once you've removed the trim plate, it'll be simple to take off the latch and the bolts that keep the spindle and latch in place.

If you're not changing the locks, however, a new latch should fit in your existing recess, and work just fine with your current keys. Take off the cover plate
