How to Replace an audi key fobs G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, audi key replacement key (bridgehome.cn) gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly when they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi key replacement cost because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is a standard part that is found across the audi tt key programming 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
