Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Upgrades to equipment grant a bonus on the item upgrade's stats. The bonus increases with upgrade component's level and rarity.

Components

Upgrade components can make your weapons and armour better. You can find them through destroying enemies, buying them from karma vendors or finding them in the form of item-spheres. They can also be salvaged from equipment with them, or through a high-tier salvage kit such as the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components cannot be destroyed when you remove them from an item.

The main purpose of upgrade components is to enable an item upgrade to be upgraded but they also serve other purposes. They can be stacked to increase the level of an upgradeable item, or they can be used to enhance the experience gained when upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can also be made to offer additional benefits. A crafted glyph can increase the upgrade chances of its target while an upgrade boosts the attack or defense attributes of weapons.

You can bind an upgrade Item template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will show the upgrade components that the item can be upgraded. Alternatively, you can use the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either scenario, an item will be upgraded once enough upgrade components have been collected.

Each component has a unique experience multiplier. This determines the amount of experience an item can gain when upgraded using that component. Organic components, for instance, have more experience multipliers than mechanical components. It is recommended to upgrade your organic components first until you reach the next level in the weapon or equipment, and then move on to mechanical upgrades.

In addition to the experience multiplier, each item also has the maximum number of upgrades that it can receive. The number of items that can be upgraded is determined by their upgradeable rank, and the kind of upgrade they can get. For example, the highest possible upgrade for a weapon is a weapon of tier 10. Sets

The new upgraded item will still have the extra bonuses of the original one, but its stats will differ as well.

In addition to rerolling items, players can also alter the identification of any item by engaging with an upgrader NPC. This will change the identification from an armor to a weapon or vice versa, while keeping its basic stats and the attributes it requires. The change will last for a long time and affect all characters who own the gear.

Players can also boost the level of their item on any equipped equipment by obtaining upgrade components and communicating with the NPC who upgrades the item. This will cost a set amount of crests and Valorstones depending on the upgrade track and the item kind. Each step will add 5percent more damage to weapons.

In addition to the base ilvl boost the item will also receive upgrades in other stats such as critical strike damage, PvE damage and block, parry and dodge rating. Those increases are also based on the upgrade template.

The amount of damage and defense that the item receives when it is leveled can be shown below the cost and upgrade decrease percentages in the upgrade template window. All armor and weapons that are not practice equipment gain these stats upon leveling up. The market will determine the worth of these stats. A weapon or armor with perfect rolls can command a much higher price than a non-upp’d version. The same applies to other armor pieces, like tiaras or circlets.
