How to Replace an audi replacement key cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. They're cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your vehicle. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
